“ On the surface, GEB is an examination of how the work of logician Kurt Gödel, artist M. C. Escher and composer Johann Sebastian Bach interweave. At a deeper level it is a discussion of how self-reference and formal rules allow systems to acquire meaning despite being made of “meaningless” elements. It discusses what it means to communicate, how knowledge can be represented and stored, and even what it means to have “meaning” at all. The works of Gödel, Escher and Bach are used throughout to help illustrate concepts and explain the implications of the central theme.
